Murphys area

The town of Murphys is an old gold-mining town that has become a tourist destination.  It's a great place to visit and walk around for the day, filled with all sorts of galleries, shops, and restaurants.  Murphys is about a 20 minute drive downhill from Arnold.

Calaveras County has become a winery mecca recently.  There are at least a dozen local wineries, most of which offer tours, tastings, etc.

Mercer Caverns is a well know cave attraction with guided tours.

There are a couple possibilities for golf nearby:

Forest Meadows Golf Resort is in Murphys

Greenhorn Creek is a larger resort, and guarenteed to be snow free.  It's approximately 20 minutes away downhill of Murphys.

Snow Sports

Downhill skiing:
The Bear Valley ski resort is a great place to ski
Here's a trail map
Ski rentals, lessons, and kids programs are available at the resort.

Cross-Country skiing:
Bear Valley cross-country is close by to the downhill ski area, a free shuttle bus connects them.
They claim to have one of the largest trail systems in the US

Back-country skiing:
There are lots of nice slopes near the ski area to make turns on
The cross-country folks also have tele skis for rent and are knowledgeable about backcountry routes
Mountain Adventure offers backcountry guided tours and lessons

Sledding:
There are lots of places to sled, from near Arnold to near the ski area up the hill.
We'll try to have a handful of simple sleds and saucers around for general use
There will be an organized sledding expedition Saturday afternoon - details at the ceremony.

Snowshoeing:
The Big Trees State park is right at the edge of Arnold and has miles of trails to wander.  The basic 'look-at-the-huge-trees' loop is usually kept clear enough that you don't need snowshoes, but they're useful if you want to venture onto extended trails.
