Bear Valley cross-country is close by to
the downhill ski area, a free shuttle bus connects them.
They claim to have one of the largest trail systems in the US

There are lots of nice slopes
near the ski area to make turns on
The cross-country folks also have tele skis for rent and are knowledgeable about backcountry routes

Snowshoeing:
The Big Trees State park is
right at the edge of Arnold and has miles of trails to wander.
The basic 'look-at-the-huge-trees' loop is usually kept clear enough
that you don't need snowshoes, but they're useful if you want to
venture onto extended trails.
